Whether you are just entering your fifties or are somewhere beyond it is never to late to prevent skin damage or to slow the progression of aging. The fifties also have the added frustration of per menopausal and menopausal symptoms which for many women leads to changes in complexion including extreme dryness, acne or rosacea.
Further more you will begin to experience some or all of the following change in your skin. Cell turnover is slow and will continue to slow even more as you age; complexion is dull and dry. Loss of elasticity is very apparent as expression lines no longer disappear, as well your facial pores become much more visible especially on your upper cheeks and nose. The results of sun damage also become apparent with the appearance of spider veins, age spots and possibly precancerous spots; all of which can be treated with the help of your dermatologist.
Cleansing both morning and night with a non soap cleanser is recommended. Soap cleansers will add to the dryness so instead use a foam a gel cleansing product with moisturizing properties.
In your fifties and beyond moisturizing is the key and therefore a priority. With that being said it is crucial to use a moisturizing serum containing an antioxidant such as vitamin C on your facial skin while it is still damp. Then as usual apply a moisturizer with SPF 20 with UVA and UVB protection to your entire face and neck.
At the end of the day before bed use a prescription retinoid to help stimulate collagen and to give added moisture to your skin. If you do not want to use a prescription, there are moisturizers which contain retinols; look for it on the label.
